The He-162 Volksjaeger has long been a popular model subject with great kits in all popular scales from Tamiya to Revell to Trimaster. It is an interesting plane and now we have an excellent book documenting the development to deployment to the end of the small jet fighter. Written by Robert Forsyth and Eddie J. Creek, this is a wonderful book with great profiles, pictures and information on the He-162.

The chapter breakdown is as follows:

Air War in Vietnam is not your typical “chronological order” book. It is more of an in-depth study of the Vietnam Air War, which makes for some very interesting reading. Rather than have a chronological timeline of events (as is typically the case with...

Air War in Vietnam is not your typical “chronological order” book. It is more of an in-depth study of the Vietnam Air War, which makes for some very interesting reading. Rather than have a chronological timeline of events (as is typically the case with historical books), the author has arranged his book based on studies of various individual aspects of the air war.

This book has 612 total pages, of which 413 are the main text of the book. There are relatively few illustrations and maps in relation to the text, with a total of 36 illustrations sprinkled throughout the book. Footnotes comprise 155 pages, and the extensive index is 24 pages.

Jimi Hendrix 1/10 bust

Forums - Fri, 03/08/2024 - 13:22
I completed the Concept Miniatures 1/10 scale bust of Jimi Hendrix this week. The kit came in three parts, left arm with guitar, strap connector on his left side and the body/left arm. I replaced the tuning forks with spare PE parts and made a buckle for the strap from foil and lead foil. The power cord is coiled wire from a old alarm system. I made a Fender logo decal on the computer fpor the guitar head. I adapted the base to suggest a speaker. He's painted in several brands of acrylic paint.

A new set of 3D printed F/A-18E/F Super Hornet exhaust nozzles (early version) in 1/48th scale are provided by Detail & Wonder Studios for Hasegawa and Meng Kits.

Note: There is no official website for Detail & Wonder Studios, but a Facebook page is available.

In the Package and Product Notes

There are two (2) 3D-printed exhaust nozzles inside a small but very sturdy black box. Each nozzle is individually enclosed in a plastic Ziploc bag and cushioned with a foam insert. These are drop-in replacements for the Hasegawa and Meng kits.

The printed resolution of the nozzle is immaculate and there are NO visible build-up layers. There is a lot of fine detail throughout the entire nozzle and some contrast color weathering will make them pop during the finishing stage.

ICM continues to add to its excellent aviation figure series with this latest contribution, WWII Pilots of British Naval Aviation. The title of the kit is a bit of a misnomer as the included figures only feature a single pilot. The other two figures are a sailor and a naval officer. In addition, I was surprised to see that this set only included three rather than the usual four that ICM offers in such sets.

All that being said, I’m actually quite taken with the figures provided. The naval sailor and officer are, to the best of my knowledge, the first ever offered in plastic in this scale, and the detail is lovely. The pilot figure comes with a beautifully detailed parachute and harness slung over one shoulder, and with very little modification (mostly the color of his pants) could be changed out to an RAF fighter pilot with ease.

In yet another happy move, ICM has now released a set of very nice figures to support their growing line of 1/35th helicopter kits. Set in the Vietnam War era, this set of four figures depicts a typical support crew performing general maintenance on a...

In yet another happy move, ICM has now released a set of very nice figures to support their growing line of 1/35th helicopter kits. Set in the Vietnam War era, this set of four figures depicts a typical support crew performing general maintenance on a helicopter, with a commanding officer pointing to an area needing attention. Three are wearing the standard working cap for ground personnel including one bare-headed figure.

All four figures are in the casual ground *uniforms for maintenance work and are on the whole relatively easy to assemble. Some attention needs to be paid, however, to the loose hands that attach to wrists – obviously intended to provide some flexibility in positioning for your particular diorama.

It was an unusual design in that it featured an engine mounted behind the pilot, and a cannon firing through the propeller shaft. It also was equipped with a tricycle landing gear. It was designed for high performance, and the U.S.Army ordered quite a few before the beginning of World War II.

1/12 Bugatti Type 35B Roadster

Description

Steering wheels – Opening cowling – Highly detailed engine – Rubber tires and spare wheel – Chromed and Photoetched parts – Screws, tubes and artificial lather – Color Instruction Sheet

The Bugatti Type 35 is one of the most iconic and revered racing cars in motor racing history, both technically and competitively. Ettore Bugatti’s masterpiece was a unique mix of engineering skill, design, elegance, speed and its relatively light weight. Produced during the 1920s, it won an incredible number of races in both “road” and “on track” competitions. The Bugatti was in fact specifically designed for the world of racing, which included the introduction of technical and mechanical solutions for the car that made it ideal for the racing circuits of the period. Aesthetically, it was universally known and recognisable by the unmistakable shape of the horseshoe-shaped radiator which was a key design feature of Bugatti as a car manufacturer. Due to its 2,263 cm3 8-cylinder engine with a four-speed mechanical gearbox and equipped with a volumetric compressor, the Bugatti Type35B was able to attain a top speed of 210 km / h. In particular, the Bugatti 35C, due to its perfect balance between performance and handling, can be considered among the best “Type35” ever made.

The General Dynamics EF-111 Raven was developed on the aerodynamic platform of the ground-attack aircraft F-111 Aardvark. The supersonic aircraft, featuring variable-geometry wings, was identified as a suitable platform to accommodate the electronic components necessary to effectively perform the new assigned tasks. The EF-111 Raven thus became a benchmark for Electronic Warfare missions, being employed in various operational activities in Libya, Bosnia, and Iraq. Easily recognizable by the prominent protrusion on the rear fin, it was equipped with state-of-the-art electronics for its time, including terrain-mapping radar and the adoption of radar jamming systems and electronic countermeasures. The cockpit was also redesigned with the installation of a control suite specifically configured for the Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO), the officer specializing in electronic warfare.

Description

NEW DECALS SHEET FOR 3 VERSIONS – COLOR INSTRUCTION SHEET

FIGURE NOT INCLUDED

The GMC 2 ½ ton truck was built in an exceptionally high number of units and can be considered the backbone of the logistical operations of the U.S. Army during World War II. Characterized by a very robust and reliable structure, its strength lay in its excellent off-road performance, thanks to its six-wheel drive and effective suspension design. It was produced in numerous variations, including the more common “cargo” versions with open or closed cabins, “long wheelbase,” and “short wheelbase.” Additionally, various configurations, some developed directly in the field, were tailored for more specific and precise purposes. Its role was crucial in meeting the demanding logistical needs following the initial stages of the Normandy landings, involving the transportation and handling of substantial quantities of troops and materials.

1/72 DUKW 2 1/2 ton GMC truck amphibious version “D-Day 80° Anniversary”

Description

NEW SUPER DECALS SHEET FOR 4 VERSIONS – COLOR INSTRUCTION SHEET

FIGURE NOT INCLUDED

To meet the logistical needs of the US Army landing forces in transferring loads quickly and efficiently from ships to beaches, the American General Motor CCKW-353 2½ t 6×6 amphibious version tactical transport truck was designed and built for this purpose. The basic vehicle components were the same as the GMC road truck with its 4,400 cm3 6-cylinder engine, three differentials and six driving wheels. The DUKW was characterized by a welded hull to make it amphibious, which was then reinforced by horizontal ribs. Its key attribute however was its extraordinary versatility and load capacity. It could carry a 2,400 kg payload or 25 fully equipped troops. DUKWs were deployed extensively in all theaters of war by the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines and the armed forces of numerous Allied countries. Notably, they featured in many significant WW11 beach landings including the D-Day Normandy landings at Utah and Omaha and also at Salerno, Anzio and on the beaches of the Pacific campaign.

1/48 B-26B Marauder
WWII American Bomber

American twin-engine medium bomber B-26, manufactured by the Glenn L. Martin Company, was designed and created in 1939 under the requirements of the US Army Air Corps for a new high-speed medium bomber. Initially, the project was called Model 179. The construction of production aircraft was started without the usual stage of a prototype or pre-series samples. The first B-26 flew on November 25, 1940, and it was adopted by US aviation in February 1941. Structurally, the B-26 Marauder was a high-wing with a spacious fuselage and a crew of five (in later versions up to seven) people. During operation, the design of the bomber was constantly changed to improve flight and combat characteristics. Since 1943, the wing area and keel were increased, with these changes, the aircraft was produced until the end of production. The last modification of the B-26B Marauder (B-26B-55-MA) was produced until February 1944; these aircraft took an active part in US bomber operations in Europe at the final stage of World War II. B-26B Marauder aircraft are known as one of the most famous US bombers during the Second World War.

1/48 WWII German Aircraft Armament
Luftwaffe was armed with a large range of weapons of different types and different purposes. The main German bombs of World War II were bombs weighing 50. 250. 500. 1000. 1800 and 2500 kilograms. The most common were high-explosive bombs. They, in turn, were thin-walled, type SC and thick-walled, type SD, and had side detonators. To reduce the depth of penetration into the ground and increase the shock wave, some bombs could be equipped with a ring in the bow. Also, some bombs could have elongated detonators – the so-called Dinort rods * (in German – Dinort-stäbe), which led to a bomb explosion before the bomb itself touches the ground. Bomb carriers were both classic bombers (for example, Ju 88 or He 111), and attack aircraft or fighters, on the suspension of which bombs weighing up to 500 kilograms could be placed. Naval aviation, in addition to bombs, also used torpedoes, using them in various theaters of war – in the Mediterranean, in the Atlantic and in the North of Europe.

1/35 ‘Danger! Mines!’ Ukraine, summer 2022
The full-scale fighting that began in February 2022 had several stages. One of the most difficult was the summer of 2022, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine held back enemy strike groups in the South and North-East. The territories where direct clashes took place were actively mined, as a result of which the places of hostilities were saturated with hundreds of thousands of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. Besides them, aircraft bombs, mortar shells and ammunition that did not get stuck and did not explode remain in the ground. Demining, engineering intelligence and installation of mine-explosive barriers are engaged in combat engineer units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Most Ukrainian sappers are universal specialists who are able to perform a wide range of tasks. Their work is needed everywhere, they work in different areas of hostilities and provide engineering support for many units. Sappers perform assigned tasks not only in the second echelon of defense, but also on the line of direct clashes, in front of combat positions. Also to find explosive objects sappers help dogs.

1/35 Wehrmacht Maultiers
The Wehrmacht command in its plans for conducting a lightning war well understood the role of vehicles. Reliable provision of mobility of combat units, delivery of military cargo, ammunition, transportation of personnel, weapons and other tasks were assigned to trucks. However, with the onset of autumn 1941, in the off-road conditions of the Eastern Front, thousands of Wehrmacht cars began to get stuck in wet soil and snow. It was decided to put on part of the trucks instead of the rear axle tracked trolley. This was done as part of the ‘Maultier’ (Mule) program – the creation of a half-track cross-country freight transport for the needs of the Wehrmacht. In 1942, German industry began to produce half-track cars based on three-ton trucks, among which were the KHD S3000/SS M of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (on the KHD S3000 chassis) and Ford V3000S/SS M (on the Ford V30 chassis).

The KHD-produced Maultier received the military index Sd.Kfz.3c, and the Ford version received Sd.Kfz.3b., and Ford – Sd.Kfz.3b. Machines were universal and had excellent cross-country ability, they transported personnel and cargo off-road, towed guns, with automatic guns installed in the body were used as anti-aircraft self-propelled guns, and variants with a closed body could be used as army ambulances. Starting in 1943, simplified cabs (“Einheitsfahrerhaus”) began to be installed on Wehrmacht trucks, this was done in order to simplify production.
In turn, some Maultiers were equipped with such cabins.

1/35 ‘You are important to God’
Prayer before battle

During the war, appeals to higher powers become crucial, and that’s where representatives of spiritual service, military chaplains, become essential. They perform rites for the fallen, conduct religious services, and uplift the spirits of soldiers before battle, fulfilling their duty to be alongside and support the moral well-being of the troops. In the Second World War, military chaplains were part of the armies of many countries, including the British Armed Forces. The British Army Chaplains Department was established as early as 1796, and starting from February 1919, it was renamed the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department (RAChD). During the Second World War, British military chaplains wholeheartedly carried out their duties on all theaters of war. In the performance of their duties, 96 British chaplains and 38 chaplains of the Commonwealth Army lost their lives.

Economy Kits or Production Rejects?

Forums - Mon, 03/04/2024 - 22:22
I recently purchased two Atlantis re-issue kits at a local Ollies Discount store: B-24 Pacific Raider 1:92 Scale B-25 Doolittle Raider 1:64 Scale Neither has the Revell clear plastic stand yet I find a photo of the B-25 kit Atlantis Models B-25 Doolittle Raider 1:64 Scale Model Kit New in Box | eBay showing the same box art but with a stand and decals on the displayed kit are for the version I see in stores 1/64 Atlantis Re Pop B-25 Mitchell WW2 US Bomber Plastic Model Kit NEW 216 | eBay However, price in store was $12.99 each not the retail price I see on kits with different box art in the few hobby shops still remaining in Northern Illinois. Question: Are the kits being sold at the discount store production rejects? As the decal sheet does not include a decal for the stand, I must presume Atlantis issues some "economy priced" kits. Nothing else is missing for completion of the kits.
