As part of the US Navy Aviation Centennial celebration the San Diego chapter of IPMS and the Coronado Public Library teamed up for a Make 'n Take on July 23rd, 2011. The Library's curator, Candice Hooper supported the event with space, setup, shipping, supplies and a host of other items, including pizza for lunch! IPMSSD provided eight volunteers, and all of them were kept busy. Revell provided models and IPMS Junior Coordinator provided guidance. The models were Revell Snaptite 1:72 scale F-14 Tomcats, in keeping with the Centennial theme. Our sincerest thanks to Revell for the support.
The doors opened at 11:00 AM, and over the next three hours, forty kits were constructed and taken home. Most of the participants were boys, but there were a few girls and also special needs children. We even had four adults participate. All left with a big smile, as well as their model. Candice noted that this was a unique event in that fathers were active participants, and seemed to get a real kick out of the time spent.
The success of the Make 'n Take can be attributed to the library's enthusiastic participation; the large number of chapter volunteers who showed up; and Revell's support of the program. We are already planning another one for next year.
Special thanks to our volunteers: Rich, Dave, Gary, Colin, Dany, Manny, Bob, and Rex.
