Hasegawa Models has released two sets of hole punches for the modeler. Both are made with a punch body and three separate, interchangeable heads that screw into the body. The tools are easy to handle and the punches are very sharp.

[review image] Modeling Punch A (TT-35) comes with the body and heads with holes ranging from 2, 2.5 and 3mm. Modeling Punch B (TT-36) comes with the body with holes ranging from 3.5, 4 and 5mm. Both come packaged in light cardboard box with foam cut outs and clear plastic around the box.

I tried the smallest punch, 2mm, on a .20mm thickness of plastic and it worked rather well. The plastic disk may be swiveled in the punch with a small wire or tool so it can be removed with a pair of tweezers. Punching heavier plastic will require taking the head off and inserting something in the bottom of the head and pushing the disk out. I then tried the largest punch 5mm on a piece of .60mm plastic. The punch would cut through it, but the disk remained in the head. It also had to be pushed out from the back.

On the plus side, the tools are made with a very good quality metal. They are easy to handle and the heads are simple to change. The average modeler shouldn't have any trouble working with them. Both sets didn't come with any instructions, but it shouldn't be a problem.

On the minus side, I would have wanted a better packaging to protect the tools. It would have been nice if Hasegawa had provided a set of rods the same size as the holes to remove the plastic disk when it is stuck in the head. The user should be careful in removing the disk by swiveling it from the front. You might dull or nick the cutting edge.

In the final analysis, I would say the tools would work great when punching thinner plastic. My impression is that they will work best with .20mm and .30mm plastic. The modeler will have to experiment on how thick each punch will work best for them.
