I'm a tool and glue geek. Maybe it's 25+ years in the aerospace industry working with composite structures ("rags and bags", as it used to be called), or maybe it's the variety of modeling projects I tackle. In any case, I'm always on the lookout for new stuff.

X-1 Instant Adhesive and X-1A Activator certainly fit into that category. Billed as an odorless, water based and flexible adhesive, this is NOT a CA type fixative - don't be misled by the bottle and its' accompanying accelerator spray. Rather, X-1 is intended for a variety of craft applications, particularly porous ones - so it's really aimed at builders of flying model aircraft, landscapes, dioramas, etc. But that's instantly translatable to our specific hobby - think ground coatings, rubble, trees and shrubs, etc, and the use of cardboard, particle board and wood for model bases.

I tried X-1 on several modeling materials and, as the instructions indicate, you'll have better results in joining together porous materials. Another difference from the superglue process is that you apply the adhesive to the surface to be glued, spray the Activator directly onto the same surface, and then join the parts. Get it right the first time; this stuff sticks like grim death once you've joined the parts.

The water based nature of X-1 makes for easy cleanups. Although I haven't tried it for installing clear parts, I suspect I will like it - being able to use a damp cotton swab to remove the excess without affecting the underlying surface sounds like a winner to me.

You can find X-1/X-1A at larger hobby or craft stores or contact Ed Sussman and crew at Purimco for more information. Recommended!
