Roads, runways, bunkers, buildings, zimmerit and more from Form-U-Lay in the U.K., 1/72, 1/35, 1/16 scale vacuum formed accessories.

Jeff Green of Form-U-Lay produces some inexpensive vacuum formed accessories to help you improve your models (i.e. zimmerit) or display them (road surfaces, runways, bunkers, buildings, tunnels, bridges, gun-pits, tents, corrugated iron, etc.).  Each item that I’ve seen consists of a sturdy white 0.5mm polystyrene sheet approximately 10” x 18”.  You can finish and use the sheet as the final product, or if you’re thrifty and follow the manufacturer’s advice, use the sheet as a mould and create your own buildings or roads or runways, etc. casting Plaster of Paris or your favorite medium (Jeff even tells you how).  There are items for 1/72 and 1/35 modelers, as well as large 120mm.

Since many of us build aircraft, I’ll jump ahead and point out Form-U-Lay has aircraft tarmac/concrete sections in 1/72 and 1/48 scales, and a 1/72 fighter dispersal.  The Soviet airfields have hexagonal shaped sections – bet you didn’t know that, did you?  All these have realistic “concrete texture, tar seams and earthing (grounding) points”.

There’s a treasure here for armor modelers.  Road surfaces are designed so that they can stand alone or you can join different units.  There are dirt roads with ditches and tree stumps, main roads with cobbled streets or cracked paving, raised sidewalks, sunken tramlines, shell craters, ruined buildings, and more!  Ruined 1/35 buildings include a church, graveyard, tenement, 2-story factory, traditional inn, bank/city building and Middle Eastern shops and dwelling flat.  In addition to rare British pillboxes there are German pillboxes and flak bunkers.  There are different style zimmerit sheets molded in thinner .025 polystyrene that are easy to cut, bend and cement right onto your 1/35 scale model.   1/72 offerings include a farm cottage, gun-pit, ruined house and railroad embankment, and train tunnels.  Their sales sheet showed additional resin accessories in their line, assorted 1/35 and 120mm 55 gal drums, backpacks and rucksacks, U.S. jerry cans, weapons crates, and more.

Why pay this much money or more for a one time road surface to display your model, when you can have a Form-U-Lay mould and crank out as many as you want?  It couldn’t be any simpler!  Check out their line or contact Form-U-Lay at www.form-u-lay.co.uk, email: orders@form-u-lay.co.uk, phone: +44 1989 765557, Address: Mr. J Green, 19 Isca Close, Tudor Park, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, HR9 5UH, U.K.  Thanks to Form-U-Lay for the review samples.

The “Soviet octagonal tarmac” is a jpg and would be an interesting “unusual” item with appeal to our a/c builders…

“120mm road – building” – a base with street and building in large 120mm scale

“1-72 scale road” = ditto in 1/72

“1-35 scale road” = 3 sheets of roads in 1/35 scale
