Dragon is up to its old tricks... producing some fine figures. Those are the kind of tricks I like. This set of German Winter Grenadiers is in the Gen 2 set. I assume that means the second generation of figures produced by this company.

[review image] Upon opening the box one finds 9 frets of plastic and one of photo etched parts. Overall there are over 200 pieces in this set to produce 4 figures. The box art may be used as a painting guide as the artwork is superb.

I wish I could say the same for the instructions as they are somewhat vague. Any good reference book should correctly interpret the locations of some of the equipment.

Since these figures represent the German Winter Grenadiers, Wiking Division on the Eastern front 1943-1945, they are dressed in the greatcoats that were necessary for the climate. I would like to mention that the weapons and equipment included in this set are some of the finest I have ever seen. The figures consist of two running grenadiers with their weapons and a MG team consisting of a gunner and a loader in a prone position.

As I have stated in earlier reviews of Dragon figures, I feel that they have used entirely too many parts to produce a figure. I see no reason to have a head molded in three parts and having the hands, feet and belt buckles separate. This leaves too much margin for error. I would however like to mention that these parts fit very well.

I took a little longer to build the figure due in part to the ambiguous instructions. I painted this soldier using Andrea and Vallejo acrylics. These dry very quickly and corrections may be made almost immediately. The assembly took almost three hours and the painting about two.

Did I enjoy assembling and painting them? You bet. The finished piece is one of the most detailed in my collection.

I would recommend this set and all others produced by Dragon to any modeler with experience in building and painting miniatures.

I wish to thank Dragon for supplying this kit for review and John Noack for giving it to me.
