1/48 WWI Pilot

This figure kit is cast in pale cream colored resin with just two parts, the right arm and the rest of the figure.  There was very little flash and it cleaned up quickly.

It is difficult to incorrectly attach the arm, although I inadvertently tried to do just that by hastily sticking it to the torso with CA, only to discover that the folds of the jacket didn’t match up.  A quick repositioning saved the day.  A little more superglue filled the gap at the join.  That concluded the building of the kit, the rest is painting.  There is a slip of paper with a color picture of the completed pilot to give painting clues.

As the photo shows, the figure is posed in an informal sitting or clambering posture.  It could be placed on the lip of a biplane cockpit or on the wing.  The title of the figure is “WWI Pilot,” but it could easily be a between the wars flier as well.  The uniform portrayed could easily be painted Feldgrau to make a German Great War aviator, but the collars lead me to believe that it was intended that he be Allied, probably British or American.  With that in mind, I painted the breeches and the portion of the tunic that could be seen a sort of olive green khaki shade.  The leather flying jacket and helmet look nice in dark brown and burnt sienna shading.

Casting detail is rather general.  The best feature about the individual is the face which is well sculpted and appears to be laughing.  I could only guess that this represents a pilot who had returned from his day’s mission rather than one preparing to depart.  This figure would be a nice addition to an aircraft to show scale or contribute some action.
