MSRP: $42.00 USD Available directly from Gold Medal Model or through retail outlets. Gold Medal Models 1412 Fisherman Bay Road Lopez, WA 98261 USA I would like to thank Loren Perry for this review sample. Gold Medal Models PE detail set for Trumpeter’s 1/350 Lexington is up to Loren Perry’s high standard of production. This is a large, nearly 8 x 10 inch, double relief-etched sheet that elicited a lot of oohs and aahs at the IPMS Tidewater meeting. The instruction sheet is large too, an 8 ½ x 14 sheet with two sides of instructions. What also garnered rave reviews from members of my club is the fact that the PE set is clearly labeled as to the purpose of each detail. No other set is this well engineered regardless, even in armor and aircraft PE sets. As with most of the recent GMM sets, everything you need is in one set, including watertight doors and life rings, that you used to have to buy as a separate set (and still can for other models). There are a lot of details in this set, many expected but a few surprises as well. What do I mean? Well the lifelines, ladders and flight deck nets are expected with any ship model. But nestled amongst them are details for the bridge interior and a PE replica of the last Commanding Officer! This detailed figure drew a lot of smiles at the club meeting. I am willing to bet Loren included the figure just because he could and too demonstrate the fine details achievable in his double etching process. Here is a breakdown of the details you will find in this set:
I was most impressed with the 3-bladed ship propellers, the bridge interior detail, the DF loops for back aft and the palisade. I could find few shortcomings in the set and all are minor issues. I would have liked to see more crane details, details for the 1.1 in machine guns, and boat boom details (block and tackle). I am not sure that the aircraft propellers are needed, Trumpeters are petite and as I mentioned the kit representations of watertight doors are superb and do not need replacing. But if you want to pose them open, this set meets your needs. This latest set from Gold Medal Models is a must if you want to build Trumpeter’s Lexington. The price may seem a bit high, but given the amount of detail, it is a bargain. Plus you will have many details left over for other projects. Follow my ship build review to see how they fit. Highly recommended. |
