MAW Decals specializes in Marine Corps aviation subjects. That one statement would be enough for me to take notice of the offerings these guys put forth. However, the decals are nice, thin, and in perfect register. Make no mistake; these are high quality decals, with the best subject matter. This sheet contains the markings for three F-18's from three front line Marine squadrons.

[review image] The first bug is the most colorful on the sheet with a red tail and white rudders. Flown by VMFA-232, who are also known as the Red Devils, the bird shown was deployed as part of the USS Nimitz air wing in 2007, and carries the CVW 11 tail code of NH instead of the traditional WT. It also carries non-standard style lettering for the Marine and modex markings. The tail carries CAG markings at the upper edge. Full color national insignia really make this a colorful aircraft, and looks good.

The second aircraft depicted is a C model from VMFA 212, known as the Lancers. Carrying the more familiar subdued paint schemes we normally associate with the Hornet, the markings for this guy are all lo-viz. The tail carries the familiar WD tail codes with the Maltese cross within the shield. The tail tip shows the word PIG, apparently a reference to the pilots call sign.

The third plane included is a lo-viz D two seat model from VMFA (AW) 121, the Green Knights. This aircraft has the latest night attach and all weather capabilities that a Lot 20/ Block 51 aircraft has at its disposal. The tail code VK, along with a forward facing chess horse are correct for this squadrons markings.

The nice thing about this, as well as other decal sheets from MAW are the "extras" included on the sheet. Chaff and flares are printed in three colors so loads of these items could be mixed. Vents are also included to replace the gaping holes included on the kit. Seat markings and other placards are also given to complete the options. These are quite welcome additions and give the model a more finished look.

As mentioned earlier, the decals are printed very accurately, with all colors in register. They conform well with the contours of the aircraft, work well with the popular brands of setting solutions available today, and look great when applied. I highly recommend this sheet to modelers looking to replicate current Marine Corps aircraft. To view this, or any other fine MAW Decal product, visit their web site at www.mawdecals.com. My thanks to MAW Decals and IPMS/USA for providing this sample for review.
