Friendly fire.  The mere mention of the words sends chills through soldiers and sailors everywhere.  Following the Japanese attacks in the early morning hours of December 7th, 1941 up through 1942, the Navy issued a directive to increase the National Insignia size as trigger-happy gunners were downing friendly aircraft.  In addition to the increased size tail stripes were added to the rudders of the aircraft.  It all sounded like a good idea at the time, but what really happened is that the red center of the insignia also got bigger.  Bigger was not better in this case.  The larger centers looked even more like Japanese “meatballs” to the gunners.  This eventually necessitated the elimination of the red center and the elimination of two of the insignia on the wings.

These decals show the effects the directive as they apply to the SB2U-1, -2, -3 Vindicators.  With the release of the Accurate Miniatures Vindicators these decals are right on time.  The instructions explain the size, or should I say resizing, of the insignia.

The two decal sheets include six sets of rudder markings and twelve 78” stars and six smaller fuselage stars.  Unlike the Accurate Miniatures offering, the rudder markings are present in their full color glory.

Microscale prints the decals so they will respond well with the MicroSol and MicroSet system of decal setting.  The printing is first rate, opaque, thin, and in perfect register.  The colors look like perfect matches for the Insignia Red, White and Blue.

So if you have the Accurate Miniatures kit or the older HiPM kit and you want to add some color to the Blue Grey and Light Grey paint scheme this is a great place to start.  I highly recommend these decals.

The decals can be obtained directly from Yellow Wings Decals at www.yellow-wingsdecals.com or through most hobby shops.  I would like to thank Yellow Wings Decals for the review copy.
