The latest version of the venerable AH-1W in Marine service is the AH-1W.  The AH-1Z is in flight testing at this time.  The AH-1W incorporated all the changes that were learned by combat in Desert Storm, including the Night Targeting System (NTS) upgrade.

Decals for helicopters are often overlooked but this latest sheet from Twobobs depicts an AH-1W from HMLA-169 in both 1/48th and 1/35th scale.  Included on the full color photo instruction sheet are actual photos of the real thing at an airshow.  In addition to the color photos there are numerous color profiles, with paint and color suggestions, that will take any guess work out of the actual painting and decal placement.  Also included is a nice history on the NTS upgrade.  One of the things I like about the Twobobs instructions is the way they include what is out there for this particular type aircraft.  The instructions tell you what is available in 1/48th and what you need to do to build this particular aircraft.  The same is true for 1/35th scale.  Overall I’d have to say that the style of instruction sheets is the best on the market.

The decals are included on two sheets, one large and one half sheet.  The decals are printed by Microscale.  That means they are in register, very thin and react well with Microset and Microsol.  What makes this sheet unique is that the decals are in 1/48th and 1/35th scale.  This particular AH-1W is very interesting with its sharkmouth and black and red tail boom.   The red stripes are provided in decal form just in case you don’t want to paint them. The helicopter is overall two tone grey but the splash of color makes it an interesting subject.  Slime light decals are also included, as well as, complete stenciling in both scales which is a nice touch.

These superb decals are a welcome addition to the helicopter modeler.  I highly recommend these decals.
