During the 1970s, the world was in a time of turbulent change. The United States was still involved in the Viet Nam, the Cold War was in full force, and "oil crisis" became a major consideration for almost everyone. Throughout the decade, aviation development was making strides toward new and better aircraft, although many older variants were still in operation. This book gives an outstanding overview of the aircraft that were keeping peace in the skies above us.

The book is not really arranged in chapters, regarding specific types or nationalities of service. It is more of a visual stroll through the many aircraft used in the 1970s by the military branches of countries such as Great Britain, France, the United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Canada, and also smaller Air Forces such as Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Nigeria.

The photography is beautifully done. And, although the photographs are not the detail-oriented "walk-around" type, there is still a feast for the eyes on the various marks and types of camouflage and markings used by the Air Forces of the nations covered. There are photographs of attack aircraft, fighters, bombers, transports, civilian-type scout aircraft, electronic-warfare aircraft, tankers, and helicopters of almost every type.

For an aircraft enthusiast, this is a great book to have in the library. For the scale modeler, there is enough inspiration to be found on these pages to fire up a virtual building frenzy. Got a favorite aircraft? There is probably a really nice photograph of it in this book! This is a very enjoyable reading experience, and one that comes highly recommended.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Midland Publishing and IPMS/USA for this review sample.
