Early in WW II Germany recognized the need for an offensive maritime aviation presence to help choke off the shipping lanes supplying England and other Allied forces in Europe. Up to this time the Kriegsmarine controlled the aviation assets and were limited to a fairly small number of obsolete observation aircraft used mainly as spotters for naval gunfire. A number of key officers transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1937 and were instrumental in developing the aviation doctrine that became standard in later years. This book covers the evolution of the Luftwaffe’s maritime strategies and early war years.

Printed on high quality paper on 96 pages by Specialty Press, this book is the first installment of a two book series covering the Naval Air War over the Atlantic Ocean, Baltic, and Mediterranean Seas. In text and photos, this edition gives a good overview of the Luftwaffe’s most challenging front. The photos included are all of high quality, and many are not found in other collections. Color profiles of select aircraft types are highlighted to show wear patterns, unit markings and other pertinent information relevant to building accurate models of these aircraft.

In chronological order, the opening years of WW II are covered to good extent. Profiles of some of the major players in Luftwaffe Anti-shipping doctrine are also included to give the reader a very good overview into the personalities involved. The author did a good job in researching the subject, and presenting the material in a manner that is both clear and concise.

I really enjoyed reading this work and getting a much better look at the nuts and bolts of Nazi Maritime ops. I’m looking forward to the second installment of this series, and will certainly be happy to add it to my library of German subjects. I highly recommend this work to any student of WW II, Luftwaffe aficionado, or modeler looking for good information regarding the naval air campaigns of the Second World War.
