Pat Covert is one of the deans of automotive scale modeling. His how-to articles and finished kits have appeared in just about every modeling publication there is. This book is another example of his efforts to share his knowledge and experience with those of us who are either just getting into (or back into) the hobby or trying to learn the skills and techniques to make our projects look really great.

This book starts with the basics of tools and glues, then goes on to talk about painting, polishing, decaling, and foiling. It finishes up with more advanced techniques such as engine and interior detailing and weathering. Each chapter along the way concludes with one or two photo essays demonstrating the techniques described in that chapter. As an added bonus, there are also themed photo galleries showing finished models that illustrate the successful application of those techniques. Color photos are used liberally throughout the text to illustrate the discussions as well.

Personally, I found the book quite interesting. It is the first time I have ever read a discussion of using polishing kits that actually explained how to tell when to move on to the next stage. The chapters on interior and engine detailing were also highly informative. I came away from almost every chapter with the feeling that I now understood the techniques and could actually try some of them out on my next project. And even though I am far from a beginning modeler, I learned some things from even the basic chapters about tools, glues, and preparation.

Overall, I feel this book has something to offer almost anyone interested in building better model cars, regardless of their skill level. I have a feeling it is going to become a well-used part of my library in the very near future.
