The latest in Osprey’s series of modeling books is this volume on the legendary Corsair, authored by Brett Green of Hyperscale fame. The book follows the format that Osprey has established for this series.  A brief history of the Corsair is followed by an overview of the available plastic kits and a small selection of detail photos.  The  photos are nice, but few in number, and most modelers will probably have more comprehensive references already.  But this book really isn’t intended as a walkaround reference anyway.  The opening sections only provide an introduction to the meat of this volume, a selection of modeling projects in various scales and at different levels of sophistication.

The first project is a very nicely done conversion of the Trumpeter F4U-1D to an early F4U-1 birdcage Corsair.  Plentiful construction photos supplement the text to illustrate the details of this build.   The Trumpeter kit is followed by a Tamiya 1/72 F4U-1D, the Hobbycraft 1/48 scale Corsair in FAA markings, a Tamiya 1/48 FG-1D in the markings of El Salvador (very different from the usual Corsair), the Tamiya 1/48 kit converted to an F4U-4 using the CMK conversion kit, the High Planes 1/72 scale F4U-5N, and a colorful build of the Hasegawa F4U-7 in French markings.  All these projects are amply covered with text and photos.  I was especially interested in the F4U-4 conversion, as I own but have not yet used the CMK kit.   The build article points out the potential trouble spots of the conversion, and will be most useful when I do tackle it.  The book ends with a page of large color blocks illustrating the most common Corsair colors.

This series seems to get better with each release.  I don’t know a modeler who doesn’t love to look at well built models, either in books or in person, and the Osprey books allow an intimate look at some fine models.  The book is worth owning on that basis alone, but the construction tips make it a must have for the Corsair aficionado.
