This is a reprint of a classic in auto publishing. First published in 1974, the much sought-after "Culshaw and Horrobin" was unavailable for some 20 years until reprinted in 1997. It has now been reprinted again. The publishers state quite clearly that, wherever possible, this edition is an exact reproduction of the original, but that this means that the standards are not up to today's standards - indeed, the book has a very old fashioned feel with its all monochrome photos and 1974 cut off date.

However, this is still an important book, as it covers in some breadth the full scope of British auto makers from the earliest horseless carriages to the classic sports cars of the early seventies. Manufacturers, all 700 of them, are treated alphabetically, and chronologically within their entry. Information is imparted with a concise historical text supplemented by tables of technical information, though of course, there is little information on individual marques in a book that is relatively compact for its subject. Photos are all black and white, and not always the best quality, but there are plenty of them for the enthusiast to drool over.

Naturally, I had a look for my first car, the Austin Maxi, and it is listed but without a photo - it was too new when the book was first published!

In summary, this is good encyclopedia on the subject, but one that could stand an updating and a selection of color photos.
