Windsock International has been the premier modeling magazine for the World War I modeler for many years and with this new volume editor and publisher Ray Rimell has completely re-vamped the magazine. As ever, the emphasis is on top quality models, detailed research articles and in depth reviews of books, kits and decals. What’s new is that there is more of everything – reviews, reference and color.

For example, this issue contains a wonderful piece on scratch building a 1/48 scale Handley Page O/400 bomber – a big task indeed and the results are a very impressive model. This article is accompanied by a series of well-taken photos of the model that highlight the detail that has gone into building the monster.

There is the first part of a series on Austro-Hungarian naval aircraft, illustrated by period photos, color profiles and 1/72 plans drawn by noted historian George Haddow. Also featured is a continuation of a series on early US Navy camouflage by author Colin Owers. An interesting feature is a short but fascinating article that tells the story of a piece of original World War I Italian aircraft fabric. It is always good to be reminded of the history behind our hobby!

Reviews are included for books, decals and 17 kits, including a number of new Austro-Hungarian subjects that are supported by some additional color profiles for extra reference – a useful little addition!

This is definitely one for the WWI aero-modeler and if you haven’t tried Windsock International yet, I suggest that you will find it extremely useful!
