MSRP: $39.95 www.jakemelampy.net or www.reidairpublishing.com It's been quite some time that I've had the opportunity to review a book that literally knocked my socks off, but these reference offerings neatly disposed of both socks summarily. The Viper Guide (136 pages) and the Hog Guide (120 pages) are both compilations of probably the most impressive array of color photographs of both subjects I've ever seen at one time. These books are semi-hard cover printed on heavy glossy stock and are full color. I'm not sure just how the Author gained access to this magnificent collection of these aircraft opened up, but to say that they are truly spectacular is an understatement. While the text is also extremely well done, it's these photographs that drive the value of these books home. The Hog Guide deals primarily with A-10s used during the Gulf War and includes all the various modifications and upgrades with really clear photos. In point of fact, there is so much accurate information contained here, that I think it will actually spur me to drag the 1/32nd scale Trumpeter monster that found its way to the bottom of my stash for "resurrection". Something I had not even considered prior to seeing this book. The Viper Guide is equally well executed dealing primarily with the "C" and "D" versions, and if you are anything like myself, I wasn't clear on what equipment and changes there were in a block 25, 30, 40, 50 etc. This will change that for you. Again, a full color and chock full of clear photographs. In short, while I have become somewhat selective with purchasing new books, I believe both these are, without a doubt, a "must have" for the serious modeler.
