This is the first book in the Allied Wings series by RAF In Combat books. Telling the story of this little-known early mark of Griffon Spitfire in just 46 pages is like packing a quart into a pint pot, but author Phil Listemann has done just that.

Inside, you'll find a short development history then the book outlines the mark's service history with 41 and 91 Squadrons, RAF, the two frontline squadrons that were equipped with the Mk.XII. Following on from this are lists of operational sorties, kill claims by the Mk.XII including many kills of the despised V-1 flying bombs, aircraft lost and a roll of honour.

The book is illustrated with many nice photos of the type in service along with shots of the aircrew. An added bonus for the modeler is a set of very well executed side profile paintings of the Mk.XII.

A very nice book on a mark of Spitfire that merits more attention and one I can recommend. The next in the series will be on the Martin Marauder in RAF service - one to look out for also if this one is anything to judge by.

Our sincere thanks to Phil at RAF In Combat for the review sample. RAF In Combat books can be obtained directly from their website; please also see their list of distributors on that website.
