The latest edition in the renowned Modelling series is on the Luftwaffe workhorse the FW-190A, F and G. Typical of the series the book is softbound with numerous color construction photos and historical pictures.

There is a little something in this book for everyone. All the major scales are covered: one 1/72nd scale kit, two 1/48th kits and three 1/32nd kits. The 1/72nd scale offering is a nice build of the Revell Fw-190A-8/R11 night fighter. For 1/48th the author utilizes a Tamiya A-3 and a Dragon G-3. The Hasegawa family of kits is used for the 1/32nd scale offerings.

Each kit is given at least one special item that is highlighted and detailed, such as how to use vacuform canopies and photo etch. The author has some unique techniques that had me scratching my head, but they really worked on the subjects covered. Prior to each chapter is a listing of the kit used, skill level, scale, additional details added and the paints used. In addition a small box with highlights of the real aircraft is included. All the pictures are large so you'll be able to see everything that is happening. I especially liked the 'lozenge' camouflage on the Tamiya A-4.

There are appendixes that cover special modeling ideas, such as making bases. This section contains three additional models built by other builders, but they are not covered in the same level of detail as the author's offerings. There is a paint chip chart included that is okay but not the definitive source. There are some reference photos of a real Fw-190 that will be helpful.

The only drawbacks that I could find were the large photos of the box top art and book covers. Is it really necessary to take up a half a page with them? I would have liked to see a more advanced construction article than the one provided. An engine and/or armament detailed build would have added to the value of the book. This does not mean the book is bad. It is a good tool for the beginning to moderate builder.

There are some high quality period color photos that are interspersed throughout the book. These photos appear to be color balanced properly and are a very good reference for the modeler.

I recommend this book to the beginning and moderate modeler.

The book and the rest of the series can be obtained from you local hobby shops.
