2007 is an appropriate year for Vulcan books to be published, as for the first time in 14 years, a Vulcan graces the skies over England. XH558 made the last Vulcan flight in 1993, and has just completed a series of post-restoration test flights to return her to the display circuit in 2008. Just one more reason to visit Britain next year!

The Vulcan story dates back to 1946 and an RAF requirement for a long range nuclear bomber for the post-war era. Part of the famous V-Bomber trio, the Vulcan entered service in 1957, and served with distinction into the 1980's, finally seeing combat service during the Falklands War of 1982. Retired from active service in the late eighties, such was the popularity of the aircraft that the RAF kept one on charge solely for air displays until 1992.

There have been many Vulcan books written over the years, but this new book in the Aerofax series is not only timely; authors Butler and Buttler have even dug up new information on the type's development and nuclear-capabilities as formerly secret documents have been released in recent years. The text is a fascinating read even for those with some familiarity with the Vulcan.

Complimenting the text are many black and white photos, many of which are new to me, and a lavish color section at the back of the book. I have to say that the overall Silver scheme of the early B.1s is my favourite. Finally, Mark Howley contributes a page of unit badge paintings that will be of use to the modeller.

With Airfix's re-release of their 1/72 kit, and the success of XH558's test program, it's a good time to be a fan of the 'Tin Triangle', and this book is a welcome addition to my book shelf.

Our sincere thanks to Marie at Specialty Press for the review sample. Aerofax books are available from Specialty Press and from leading book retailers.
