This latest in Ad Hoc's From the Cockpit series is timely with the recent release of various new Gannet kits in 1/72 and 1/48. If you have any of the previous books, you'll know the format - a series of historical sections interspersed with personal reminiscences by air and ground crew of the type, followed by short squadron histories and illustrated throughout with many wonderful photos and profiles of the type. All this is done with a laconic style laced with dry humor; typical of the Royal Navy.

What I'd like to point out in this review are the quality of the photos - most are very good, and many have stood being blown up to full 11X8 size without suffering any loss of quality. There are a couple of extremely nice shots of post-war British carriers included here as well. Roger Chesneau's full colour profiles grace 4 pages in the center of the book, and these offer some interesting alternatives to kit decals.

The book deals mostly with the Royal Navy experience, but there are short sections on the Gannet's service with Indonesia, Australia and Germany.

At around $30, I think this is good value for money and while not a sole reference for the modeller, it will be an extremely valuable addition to your reference library, particularly if you have a Gannet or two in your "to build" pile.

Our sincere thanks to Ad Hoc Publications for the review sample; their books are available directly from their website.
