You have probably heard about the XB-70 Valkyrie, the TSR.2 and the CF-105 Arrow.  They were advanced aircraft that never made it to production due to some interesting circumstances.  But have you heard about the SO.4000, the Ilyushin IL-30, or the Hawker P.1121? Nope, well read this book and you will.

The book is based on aircraft that reached the flying stage as prototypes, research aircraft and even some that saw some squadron service during the Cold War period from 1945 through the early 1990’s.  There are some very familiar aircraft and some that I had never heard of, especially some of the French, British and Russian makes.  There are pictures of many (but not all) of the aircraft in this book and some of these are just begging for a little more research to see what they look at.

Another of my interests is “what if” designs, and this book gives a ton of information on what might have been if strategies, technologies and yes, even politics had gone differently.  Everything from bombers, fighters, V-STOL, research aircraft, etc is discussed in some detail with one famous failure, the BAC TSR.2 getting a whole chapter (but only 2 pics).

All in all, a very interesting read about some neat aircraft and some really strange ones.  If you have an interest in how aircraft were designed, or in prototypes, X planes or your next potential What if design, check out this book.  It is worth the read.
