The Soviet Ministry of Defense issued the first requirements for an Advanced Tactical Fighter in 1971, designated PFI (Perspektivnyy Frontovoy Istrebeetel). The primary mission of the aircraft would be as a close-in fighter, armed with short and medium range air to air missiles, and an internal gun. Other requirements included fighter escort, ground attack and tactical reconnaissance. The aircraft weapons systems were required to have a “look-down/shoot-down” capability, and the aircraft was required to have day and night, all weather capability and operate in an active or passive ECM environment.

It is highly maneuverable, with a wide performance range and weapons capability. It was a surprise to western defense analysts, who did not expect an advanced aircraft with sophisticated weapons systems from the Soviet Union.

Extensive in-depth coverage of the aircraft design and capabilities is provided, followed by a review of the modifications and variations of the MiG 29, including the carrier variants. The MiG 29 has been exported to, and is in use by, numerous countries.

The MiG 29 is compared to the F-16 and F-18 fighters of the United States, the French Dassault Mirage 2000-5, and the Eurofighter EF2000. The MiG 29 is equal to or better to these aircraft in most categories. This aircraft, in the hands of a determined, capable pilot, would be a highly dangerous adversary.

The final section of the book covers a variety of MiG 29 models that were available at the time of publication. This is a comprehensive review of the kits, and the author’s preferences.
