When you think of heavy lift helicopters, do you think about Skycranes, Chinooks and Super Jolly Green’s?  I did, but also knew the Russians had developed some big choppers, just hadn’t heard very much about them.  This book gives a great insight into the heavy lifters from the Soviet Union.

The book covers in detail each of the 4 main Heavy Lift versions with a history of development, information about their usage, different versions (where appropriate), and full structural descriptions.  This is backed up with 200 b/w and color photos and some great line drawings of each type.

When you consider the prototype for the Mi-6 first flew in 1957 and the V-12 was capable of lifting a 25-ton payload (that’s right, 55,110 pounds) you get a feel for what OKB-329 was capable of.

The latest version, the Mi-26, can be seen today in many liveries and one of the neat pictures in the book is of one of these recovering a Ch-47 Chinook which had been downed in Afghanistan.  The Chinook looks like it would almost fit inside the Halo.

If you have the Amodel kit of the Mi-6, this book will help you detail it and give some interesting color options.  But you just need an interest in whirlybirds to enjoy this book.

The book may be ordered by calling 1-800-895-4585 or by visiting www.specialtypress.com.  A $4.95 shipping and handling fee is added to each order.  When you order tell them you read about from IPMS/USA.
