The IPMS standard for displaying model aircraft is wheels down and cockpit open. But as we build we have all admittedly buzzed the workbench with our latest aircraft project (Ok, at least I do at the age of 42!). So, if you are tired of displaying your models in this fashion and want a little more action in the pose, then FlexiDisplay just might be what you are looking for.

Creative Displays has come up with an innovative way of display models that will not require modifications to the kit or crafting a display base. The FlexiDisplay has three rubber tipped and moveable acrylic rods that can rotate to support a model aircraft in any number of attitudes. To demonstrate this flexibility (and because I have no models wheels up) I used an old 1/48 scale display model of the F4D Skyray. I found that the rubber tips kept the model, with its smooth surface, from sliding off despite high angles of attack. Just make sure that you tighten the set-screws to ensure that the legs don’t collapse under the weight of the model.

I don’t think that FlexiDisplay is as clean looking as a single acrylic rod or wire supporting the model, but on the other had you do not need to drill holes to attach it. My only concern would be that the rubber tips might over time stick to or discolor a painted surface. For those reasons, I think FlexiDisplay is a better temporary display base than permanent.

Although, I think it works best with a wheels up model, I can see using it at a club meeting or a contest to allow the public to better view inside the cockpit of your wheels down model. For that matter FlexiDisplay would work equally as well with space/Sci-Fi models or (gasp!) maybe to better display a car or military vehicle. It also makes a good photography prop for your models.

At almost $21 apiece, the FlexiDisplay might not be the solution for all of your display needs, but I intend on taking mine to club meetings and perhaps a show just to liven things up!
