This set is a companion to the British & Prussian General Staff #6065, and the French Imperial General Staff, #6016.

The “general staff” part of the set consists of 5 horses, 5 mounted men (3 Austrian, 2 Russian) and 2 dismounted staff officers, (1 Austrian, 1 Russian).  The other figures are Austrian or Russian Grenadiers or Infantry.  While it is necessary for the general staff to be surrounded by the rest of the army, it would have been nice to have some of those “support staff” figures, like dispatch riders, junior officers, or perhaps a meddling politician.

The figures are nicely molded; you can even discern expressions on most of the faces.  The sabers are straight, the muskets don’t sag, and the barrel bands on the muskets are there, but not overdone.  I expect minimal flash on a newly finished mold, and this one has a commendable minimum.

Four of the five mounted figures just aren’t right.  The riders’ legs stick out at an odd angle.  They just kind of sit atop the horses, they don’t look like experienced horsemen who are comfortable in the saddle.  The horses are excellent, with harness and saddle which aren’t skimped or overdone.

The uniforms are correct for the period.  All senior officers wear the standard bicorn hat.  The large medals worn by senior Austrian officers are nicely done.  For senior officers in armies of this period, uniform regulations were taken as a suggested starting point, with much deviation and personalization allowed.  Custer comes to mind as an extreme example of this, although Grant’s uniform was equally distinctive, although in the direction of unadorned simplicity.
