Eduard has released a beautiful fret of photo etch for the Revell U-boat, featuring nicely detailed parts and wonderful engraved surfaces.  Let’s take a look at what’s in the set.

Two of the largest pieces are replacement decking for both fore and aft.  These were metal on real u-boats (the rest of the deck was wood) and the engraving on these is truly a work of art.  One thought that occurred to me is that these would work very well with the Nautilus wood decking as the metal ends and a real wood deck.

Another upgrade is the cable cutter, which has multiple parts replaced to get the cutter itself closer to scale thickness and attached more realistically.  A note though, some of the parts for this will require the modeler to supply small lengths of rod/tubing.  No big deal- just a few lengths of 1 mm diameter tubing will do the trick.

Also included in the six pages of instructions are details to upgrade the main gun, AA gun, davits and cleats for the decking and all sorts of vents and hatches that are wonderfully detailed.  In the conning tower, there are etched wood boards for replacing the ones in the CT as well as grills and dials and replacement hatches.  One thing I didn’t see in the set were the missing fuel tank hatches and ports on the saddle tanks but these are easily fabricated.

This is another hit from Eduard.  The detail and execution they have with photo etch is remarkable and this set is certainly up to their high standards.  If you want to dress up your U-boat, this will fit the bill nicely.
