Technicolor.  The process used for filming in color in the 1930s-40s.  One of the first war (actually pre-war) movies to use this process, “Dive Bomber” featured Errol Flynn, Fred MacMuray and lots of really colorful Navy planes.  The movie had the USS Enterprise and featured such flyers as Butch O’Hare.  Filmed on location in San Diego and Pensacola the story follows the exploits of a flight surgeon and a commander as they tackle the problem of blackouts.  While the movie was good the real standouts were the planes.  Every principle Navy type was shown in its pre-war glory.  Filmed at a time when the aircraft were being repainted to war colors, the film had plenty of airplanes with yellow wings.  The movie has just become readily available on VHS and DVD.  If you haven’t seen it and love airplanes check out the film.  You won’t be disappointed and you won’t be disappointed in these decals either.

This release of decals from, appropriate enough, Yellow Wings has the markings of EVERY airplane in the movie that can be made out.  Vindicators, Devastators, SBC Helldivers, Wildcats, BTt-1, Seagull T-6 and Buffalos to name a few.  If it was in the movie it is on these EIGHT sheets in all their colorful glory.  Indicative of the level of research that went into the planes is the inclusion of both movie and real “Top Hat” insignia.

Sheet A and B contain all the aircraft numbers and navy markings.  Sheet C and D have all the proper size US Insignia for all the types of airplanes clearly marked.  Sheet E, G, and H have unit markings and wing markings.  Finally sheet F has the propeller tip markings.

The instruction sheet has some screen captures and each aircraft markings are described.  There is a handy color reference chart that explains which ship and section has what colors and where they belong.  They even give you a color match to the appropriate color.  Another nice thing is that along with the pictures is a recommended kit that would apply to the decals.  A further touch of quality is the inclusion of a sheet about the movie and some trivia, such as the Navy Department only allowed filming on the carrier for three days at sea.

All decals are printed by Microscale so you know they are thin, opaque and in perfect register.  The colors look perfect with the red being the appropriate shade.  The decals will respond well to the Microscale system.

Wish you had decals for the Monogram Devastator or the Accurate Miniatures Vindicator or the Classic Airframes SBC Helldiver and numerous other Navy types then look no further.  If you were going to buy just one sheet this would be the one.  Some may be put off by the price tag, but it is really a bargain for what you get. If you were going to buy just one sheet this would be the one. These decals are a high quality product and it shows in everything from the packaging to the decals to the instruction sheets.

The decals can be purchased from Yellow Wing Decals or from any hobby shop.  If they don’t have it ask them to get them.  Let them know that IPMS/USA sent you.

Highly recommended without any reservations.
