The good people at Meteor Productions have recently added an additional featured product line to their inventory of model supplies.  This line of decals, called PYN-up Decals (Pick Your Nose art), features photo-realistic reproductions of different examples of well-known nose art.  Each decal set includes an excellent full color direction sheet to show decal placement and special painting and construction requirements.  This is augmented with an additional page containing a small history of the subjects, directions for applying the decals, color references and a bibliography.  Two decal sheets are provided, a standard process sheet, which contains general markings and insignia and then the separate photo realistic nose art sheet.  This latter sheet is much thinner and more fragile than normal decals and must be handled with care.  This sheet has it’s own envelope for protection plus a duplicate of the images is provided in case the first one is damaged during installation.  These decals are very thin and contain just the nose art image.  They must be applied over a white base that is provided on the standard sheet.

This decal sheet comes at a good time while the movie “The Aviator” is playing.  The nose art duplicates the famous Jane Russell poster from the movie “The Outlaw”.  This art was painted on the nose of a B-29-25-MO of the 28th Bomb Squadron / 19th Bomb Group based at Kaden Air Base, Japan in September 1951.  The nose art has been seen many times but the people at PYN-up have been able to obtain a private photo of the left side of the nose in order to provide details of the bombing score and unit insignia.  A color photo of “The Outlaw” is included with the direction sheet.

From my own experience, I can attest that the people at PYN-up are very conscientious about accuracy.  I am always looking for unique sets of decals and had ordered a few of the PYN-up sheets earlier.  One of them contained a very minor error that was found after production of the decal.  The photo realistic decal had to be trimmed slightly to let the underlying decal show through.  Most modelers wouldn’t have noticed this and those that did could have readily modified the decal.  The people at PYN-up, however, printed a new, corrected version of the photo realistic sheet and mailed them to people who had previously purchased the incorrect sheet.  Good customer service!

This new range of decals is somewhat expensive but they will also be unique. Only 300 examples of each sheet will be available.  Interested modelers should order these while the supply lasts.  Generally, where appropriate, each sheet is produced in both 1/72 and 1/48 scale.  According to the direction sheet, these decals are only available from Meteor Productions – www.meteorprod.com.

I have yet to use these sheets but am looking forward to building some models that will utilize these famous examples of nose art.  Well recommended.  My thanks to Meteor Productions for providing this sample and to John Noack for letting me review this product.
