Incredibly, the few kits and fewer decal sheets in all scales of the incredible Vietnam era AH-1G are already decades old.  Newer kits exist of newer versions of the Cobra, but not of the 1960s-early ‘70s AH-1G HueyCobra.  So it was a great surprise to learn that Joseph Osborn’s Fireball Modelworks has released Alps printed full color decals for four colorful Vietnam Cobras in three scales.  They are:

  • #66-15272, 334th AHC "Playboys" at Bien Hoa 1967;

  • #68-17054 "Sounds of Silence" C/2/20 ARA 1st Air Cav early 1971;

  • #68-15068 "Cindy Ann", 20MM equipped with C/1/9th of the 1st Air Cav at Phouc Vinh, August 1970-March 1971; and

  • #68-15012 "#1 Du Me Mi" from F Troop, 4th Cav, Phu Bai in late 1972 with anti Strella modifications.

The last two sport different style shark-mouths which can easily be created with the decal and masks provided.

There are two beautiful 8 ˝ x 11 heavy stock full color instruction sheets that show both sides of each Cobra, specifying all markings including complete stencils and data (three complete sets are included as decals – Revell/Monogram’s latest 1/32 re-release has only a partial set, while earlier ones had no stencils), details applicable to building each model as well as a brief history.  For example, "#1 Du Me Mi" fought off the NVA’s unsuccessful 1972 Invasion of the South, with the aid of a SA-7 Strella suppression kit available in 1/32 from Fireball.  Details are accurate - in most cases, Joseph contacted crew from the choppers. Bonus markings are included; a 1st Air Cav and 101st Airmobile Div in two sizes, an extra set of "Blue Max" insignia, Cav flags, crossed cannon and crossed sabers in different sizes and styles and enough red “danger” arrows and black "UNITED STATES ARMY" markings to use with other kits, or as spares if you damage one. Serial numbers 0-9 are included in black, white and yellow enabling you to build virtually any Cobra (or Huey) that flew.

The carrier film covers each entire decal sheet (I’m in the habit of clear coating my decals first, anyway) so you have to cut out each marking.  They are printed in perfect register in opaque ink and should work well with most setting solutions, but take care handling them (start with one that has a duplicate, just in case).  The 1/32 set costs $15; the 1/72 and 1/48 sets are $12 each including postage.  Joseph will cut you a deal if you also buy the 1/32 late war anti Strella resin conversion or other decal sheets.

I highly recommend these Fireball Modelworks AH-1G U.S. Army in Vietnam decals.  In addition to being able to build the highly accurate, fully stenciled, fully researched Cobras as provided, you will have plenty of markings leftover to build the Cobra or Slick your neighbor flew on as well!  Check out Fireball’s website at www.fireballmodels.info for these and other Cobra and Huey, military and civilian decals.  You can even talk to Joseph about producing custom decals.
