Early Bf-109s are a bit of an enigma, just when you think that you know what they look like new (or old) information becomes available and you have to rethink your whole Luftwaffe camouflage schemes.  These new Bf-109 decals from Cutting Edge offer the three basic paint schemes of the pre-war type.  This sheet contains markings for three aircraft two Dora and one Berta.

These aircraft are illustrated in the Classic Publications series of books, but for those sharp eyed individuals these decals and paint schemes may not exactly jive.  These decals are based off the first generation of reproduction photos published in “Dora, Kurfurst and Rote 13”.  This series of books was the first serious study of Luftwaffe paint schemes.  The quality of those photos is superior to the ones that are currently available.  Bottom line, the research for the markings is excellent.  You may not have access to these books but the decals explain what is known and what is speculation.\The first airplane is Molders’ Dora, “Luchs”.  Finished in a very early paint scheme of RLM 62 over 65 the machine is very attractive.  The Classic Publications book has a photo of a machine with six victory bars, however, research shows that this is not the same machine as “Luchs”.

The next machine is a B-2 painted in a very nice RLM 62/63 over 65 from the Spanish Civil War.  It is very colorful in its drabness.  If you are looking for something different then this might just fit the bill.  The paint scheme was hand applied, so there are soft edges to it.

The final Dora is a Czechoslovakian Invasion machine in the traditional RLM 70/71 over 65.  This has strange white patterns on the tail and rear fuselage.  Often reported as being used in war games before the outbreak of war this machine from JG131 (later JG2) is the traditional early Bf-109D.

I highly recommend this sheet to anyone interested in the markings of the Spanish Civil War and pre-war time frame. You can’t go wrong with the decals as they are printed in register and are very thin.  They will be opaque enough to go over the dark colors.  They are very interesting in that they show the evolution of early 109s.  If you have either the Hobbycraft or the Academy kits these decals are a must.

I would like to thank Meteor Productions for the review copy and the decals can be obtained directly from Meteor at http://www.meteorprod.com or at (703)971-0500.  They are also available from most hobby shops.
