The subjects of
this new Cutting Edge sheet are P-51Ds of the 335th FS, 353rd FS, 362nd FS
and 82nd FS. The aircraft featured are those of MAJ Pierce McKennon, CPT
Charles E. Weaver, LTC Glenn Eagleston and MAJ William Shomo.
Tom Tullis, John Stanaway and Del Millers receive the
credits for this sheet, with great descriptions of each aircraft and the
colors used on it, including FS numbers. The artwork is superb, both on
the sheet itself and the color side plates. The decals are printed to the
usual Cutting Edge high quality, with minimum edge film and dead on
registration. However, colors are a different matter.
In the descriptions of Weaver’s and McKennon’s aircraft
Insignia Red and Insignia Yellow are the colors described and depicted in
the color plates. However, all of the red on the decal is a brick red and
all of the yellow is several shades darker than Chrome Yellow. The plates
and the descriptions match, but the decals do not. If the red and the
yellow were lighter, I could understand, due to sun fading. But colors
don’t darken in the sun.
Also of note is the background behind the Ridge Runner.
The artwork shows it to be a medium blue, but the decal has it printed in
black. I have no idea which is correct, or the most widely accepted as
correct.
So, we have a beautiful decal sheet that contains
markings with some questionable colors. That is really disappointing.
Why have decal makers in the last few years started printing Insignia Red
as a dark brick red? That seems to be a trend that goes back several
years.
Thanks to John Noack and Cutting Edge Modelworks for the
decal sheet for review. |
