Sukhoi Interceptors

Red Star Volume 16

by Yefim Gordon

Reviewed By John R. Lee, #11172

This author has previously written several books, and his research and collection of photos, diagrams are compiled into a very informative book.  I have several of his other books and this one is up to his usual standards of providing us with a vast and comprehensively detailed insight into the Design and the development of the Sukhoi’s Design Bureau.

This is a large 8½ inch X 11 inch 128 page card covered book with 187 pictures, ten pages of drawings and 14 pages of half or full page sharp color pictures.

Pavel Osipovich Sukhoi went through a lot in the designs of his many different aircraft from having his first OKB closed to creating some of the best that the USSR had.  This volume details the many different versions made and the problems encountered along the way.  I had always thought that the US Navy had a strange way of designating their aircraft until I read this book.  Yefim Gordon explains to great lengths the different letter/number combinations applied to his aircraft.

From the detailing of the single engine Su-9 and Su-11 to the twin engined Su-15 and a multitude of experimental aircraft and on to the introduction into service and the Su-15 ‘buddy’ IFR tanker test beds all accompanied with great pictures.  Then in chapter 7 there are 32 up close detail pictures of the Sukhoi deltas.

I fully enjoyed this book as besides detailing the Sukhoi’s design bureau it give an interesting insight into the Soviet design and procurement system as a whole.
