MSRP: $36.95 USD ISBN: 1 85780 176 8 I was intrigued by the use of the plural in the title of this book because I thought of only one Russian airline, Aeroflot. My “Cold War” thinking, however, hasn’t kept up with the reality of the Russian airline industry. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the spread of capitalism, many new airlines have started service. In fact, since the early 1990’s, about 400 airlines have registered for operation in the Russian Federation. This 8-1/2x11” soft cover photo book begins with a brief history of the Russian airline industry from the dominance of Aeroflot to the emergence of de-regulation. The first part of this volume deals with current airlines, giving a brief history of each and wonderful color pictures of the airliners. Much to my surprise, there are quite a variety of liveries and some of them are quite “flashy.” The second part of the book covers defunct airlines and some all-cargo carriers. Again, the authors give a short history of each and color photos of the aircraft. This is basically a picture book with around 300 beautiful color photos, supported by text. Kits of several Russian airliners are now available and the current trend in Russia to use more Western equipment expands the opportunities to model the aircraft of these airlines. I hope the decal manufactures take note and offer some of the colorful liveries depicted in this work. The new Aeroflot scheme on their A320 is particularly attractive to me. Anyone interested in airliners from an enthusiast or modeling point of view will enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.
