Today most readers will likely be too young to recall the immediate post WWII era.  The rosy glow of victory and a “peace in our time” attitude gradually faded into an annoyance with the impertinent and uncooperative Russians, then unease, and eventually shock upon the realization that we faced an implacable new enemy of huge numbers that we really knew very little about.  No less a personage than the famous wartime leader of Great Britain, Winston Churchill, sounded the first alarm with his famous “Iron Curtain” speech on March 5th, 1946 at tiny Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.

Our knowledge of this new enemy was abysmal and remained so, especially so in the vital field of military aviation.  Only with the relatively recent collapse of that empire have we learned much about what was going on during those early years.  Thus, this new book on early Soviet jet bombers will be of great interest to aviation professionals and military enthusiasts.

Like the numerous other “Red Star” titles on Soviet aircraft by Midland/Specialty Press and with the same excellent publishing quality we’ve come to expect of this series, this soft cover book of some 130 pages is full of well-researched text, photos, and line art illustrating the difficult gestation of many early jet bombers, most of which did not come close to operational service.  Of particular interest are passages outlining the contributions of German engineers who were “offered” the opportunity to work in Russia during the early stages of this period.  Their contribution was great…. they had little opportunity to do otherwise… with their first bomber based on the Junkers Ju 287 with swept-forward wings!

This book is recommended to serious military historians and enthusiasts; modelers inclined to “scratchbuild” will find subjects to perk their interest!  Available in the U.S at $34.95 from Specialty Press; order at www.specialtypress.com or call 1-800-895-4585.
