By summer of 1944, the Allies had air supremacy of the skies over Europe and over the German homeland.  However, the German Luftwaffe was still putting up fierce resistance to Allied bombing raids.  During this time the Luftwaffe was using advanced jet and rocket powered aircraft in a desperate attempt to regain control of the skies over the Reich.  My wife’s uncle was a tail gunner on a B-17G from June to October 1944 and he has assured me (when he would speak about his experiences) that it was no cakewalk.

The German Luftwaffe during this time started to equip front line units with new aircraft; the Me163, Me262, and He162.  This book covers some of the development of these aircraft, the turbojet engine along with information about combat operations, camouflage, and unit markings.  The book also provides a listing for units and the unit commanders.

Of particular note is the wide variety of black and white photographs, color photographs and color plates.  This is a welcome reference for aircraft modelers.

I want to thank Specialty Press for providing this excellent reference, and to John Noack for the opportunity to review this book.  This book can be purchased directly from Specialty Press at the address above.
