The latest edition in this extensive series covers the last years of the war in the East.  Most people think the Luftwaffe was inactive in the last part of the war, but this could not be further from the truth.  The Luftwaffe High Command made a fateful decision to concentrate their meager resources in the East against the Russian onslaught.  This allowed the Americans and British bombers to operate relatively unopposed from the air.  Flying until the last day of the war, the Jagdwaffe flew into the teeth of the Red Army and Air Force.  It was finally let down by its own High Command.

For those of you familiar with this series of books, this book continues the excellent research of previous volumes.  Not all people will agree with all the findings, but the research is well thought out, logical, and easy to read.  This is the first volume to deal with the controversial late war RLM Greens.  This is a typical bone of contention with researchers and this volume will be no different.  The “cloud” pattern camouflage is examined in depth.

This volume covers Bf-109Gs, FW-190A, F, S and Doras.  Over 200 photos are included, with many of them never before published.  There are great photos of a Rumanian Bf-109 with a unique gun cowling.  I can’t wait to try to model it.  There are over 25 color drawings, including some of aircraft flown by Germany’s allies (Hungary and Rumania).  This book is a valuable research tool for the modeler and historian.

Also included is a small biography of Gerhard Barkhorn.  Why this great ace hasn’t been covered in greater detail by researchers is beyond me.

This book is a wonderful addition to any library, but it is required for any Luftwaffe enthusiast.  It and the others in the series are essential research tools for the modeler.  The Luftwaffe modeler will love the color profiles and large photos.  I highly recommended this book and the entire series.  You will not be disappointed.
