The latest release in the series focuses on the Eastern Front from Nov. ’42 to Dec. ’43.

Defeat in North Africa and the disastrous loss of Sixth Army at Stalingrad were undoubtedly huge blows to the Wehrmact, but the most critical battle of 1943 was fought a Kursk.  In the spring of 1943, the Russian front bulged into the German lines between Kharkov and Orel.  Here, in July, German forces tried to regain the initiative on the Russian Front by a planned attack to pinch off this salient and straighten the front, but forewarned, the Soviets absorbed the German thrust and counterattack.  The climax to this titanic clash of forces was the battle at Kursk, scene of the largest tank battle in history, where German land forces were defeated and forced to retreat in the face of an unstoppable Soviet counterattack.  It is against this background that in this 96 page tile, Christer Bergstrom, an acknowledged expert on the air-war in Russia, describes the activities of the Luftwaffe’s fighter-force in its battle over the Russian Front.

Thumbing through the book, there are 120 photo’s and color artwork prints many of which are B&W photo with a color artwork depiction of the plane featured in each section. The planes featured are mainly FW-190’s and Bf-109’s and their respective pilots along with a few other aircraft mixed in. There is a few pages of  Rumanian 109’s early in the book that have good photo’s plus several photographs of winter camouflaged 109s’ and 190’s. There are also numerous pages dedicated to the pilots who flew these machines. There is also an interesting section of Gunther Rall and his post-war exploits in the new West German Air Force or Bundesluftwaffe created in 1956, noteworthy because in 1974 he was appointed German Military Representative to NATO’s military council. His position was cut short due to a ‘politically sensitive’ visit to South Africa that led to his resignation. Other pilots featured are Lt. Erich Hartmann, Hptm. Gerhard Barkhorn and Hptm. Walter Nowotny among many others.

This book is very good for using as reference, from the photographs to the artwork and the profile of the pilots. I recommended this book to everyone interested in the Eastern Front war.
