Defenders of the Reich
Jagdgeschwader 1, Volume Three: 1944-1945

by Eric Mombeek

Reviewed By Jack Bruno, #25313

This comprehensive history of the Luftwaffe’s premier fighter defense unit Jagdgeschwader 1, which included among its ranks some of the Luftwaffe’s leading fighter aces including Heinz Bär, Walter Oesau and Herbert Ihlefeld, is concluded in this third volume of Eric Mombeek’s classic study of the JG1. The first two volumes are already available. Many of the 750 photographs in this edition are new, and the book is greatly enhanced by its 90 new color aircraft profiles by the respected American aviation artist, Tom Tullis. This book will be of particular interest to Luftwaffe enthusiasts, aviation modelers, and aviation and military historians.

After reading this magnificent Volume 3 on JG1, the modeler immediately peruses the closet for any 109G/Fw190/He162 in order to build an aircraft representing one of the 24 color plates by Tom Tullis.  To say that this issue is just a reference would be mistaken.  This is a testament to fighter pilots fighting a losing battle but doing their duty.  As a 'History Book' and reference it succeeds in putting the reader in the cockpit and struggling to survive till the next day.  The 10 1/2 x 12 size makes it very easy to read and store in conjunction with the other volumes in the series.

This outstanding set belongs right next to the JAGDWAFFE series, also by CLASSIC PUBLICATIONS and Eric Mombeek.  As a modeling reference the pictures of planes and pilots are outstanding.  Several new plates, by Tom Tullis, reflect the red banded unit of JG1 and open the door by providing more variety and color never before appreciated.

Actual Combat reflections by pilots highlight the text.  The imagination comes alive with ground attack missions to stem the Allied advance in France.  Personal recollections titillate your mind with retreating to rear bases because of enemy thrusts approaching JG1 airfields.  I was captivated all the way to the last chapter when the unit was receiving some of the new He162 Volksjager Fighters.

Without a doubt you cannot go wrong with this issue.  I cannot wait to get the other two.  Thanks to Karin Hill from Specialty Press and John Noack for the review Book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
