It has been more than 30 years since the original history of the 2nd Tactical Air Force was first published. This is a completely rewritten and expanded account of this command's vital contribution to the Invasion of Normandy and the defeat of the Third Reich.

The 2nd TAF was equipped with Typhoons, Tempests, Spitfires, Mosquitos, Mustangs and medium bombers.  These aircraft flew ground attack and tank-busting missions in support of Montgomery's 21st Army Group as it advanced northwest Europe in 1944-45.  The medium bomber units struck at enemy transport, ammunition dumps and communication targets.  The 2nd TAF comprised British, Canadian, Polish, Czech, Norwegian, French, South African, Australian and New Zealand crews.

The first volume in this three-book set deals with the formation and expansion of 2nd TAF from its inception in June 1943 for the next 12 months, and with the initial critical month of the invasion.

While I consider myself a WWII Allied Aircraft guy, I know little about the Spitfire, other than it’s a beautiful plane.  If you are looking for a book with in-depth information about squadrons, actual accounts, etc., this is the book for you.  I was amazed at the amount of actual photos and color profiles that were present in this book.

One thing this book does is break down actual dates as to what Aircraft/Pilot/Crew claimed what kills.  It gives details for each battle in a table format: what plane was being flown, aircraft identity, time, date, pilot, and claims.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in modeling WWII aviation.
