Two areas of aeronautics that I am interested in are Close Air Support (CAS) and ugly aircraft (could be because I am half British, sorry Pat).  So a book about modern attack aircraft is right up my alley.

This book is based on reports that were first published in World Air Power Journal and International Air Power Review, both great sources for aircraft buffs.  The original articles have been updated with new sections to cover recent events (the original articles date back to 1994).

The book consists of seven chapters, one for each airframe.  They are approximately 50 pages each, except for the last one on the Ka-50, as that is the newest aircraft in this book.

The Aircraft involved are:

  1. Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II

  2. Boeing/BAE Systems AV-8B Harrier II

  3. Boeing/McDonnell Douglas AH-64 Apache

  4. Bell AH-1 Cobra

  5. Sukhoi Su-25 ‘Frogfoot’

  6. Mil Mi-24/25/35 ‘Hind’

  7. Kamov Ka-50/52 ‘Hokum’

Each plane is covered very thoroughly by requirements, development, specifications, cutaways, operational information and combat usage.  While once again, too much specification information for my tastes but others will find pretty much any stat you would want to know about these aircraft.  I was very interested to read about the combat experiences of the Russian aircraft, including the use of 2 Ka-50’s in Chechnya in December 2000.

My favorite plane of this group is by far the A-10 Warthog and in this instance, I would have liked more coverage of its use in the Gulf.  But that could be just me again.

Overall this book does a good job covering the aircraft and the updated information helps get their stories up to date.  I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in any or all of these planes.
