Basic Aircraft Modeling

by Robert Laskodi

Reviewed By Ned Ricks, #36013

The compact disk I received was a  three inch mini-CD which yields a .pdf file (readable with Adobe Acrobat, available to download for free from the Internet) of an 11 page article plus author’s page.  Professional builder and author Robert Laskodi goes through the steps to create a really sweet OOB F4U Corsair.  Color pictures are included in the article, and they are clean and clear.  When I look at those photos, I hope that this is what my model will look like when I am done following the instructions. (Probably not, but keep reading.)

Mr. Laskodi walks through the same good, sound procedure for building the sample plane, a Tamiya kit, that I see in the IPMS Journal, the IPMS website and commercial modeling magazines.  He also gives a short, but good, background on scale and guidance as to first tools.  Throughout the build, he uses specific brand names to help the novice in shopping for the right product.  Frequently, his advice is to check with your hobby store.  Regrettably, in some parts of the country, fewer and fewer modelers have such a resource.

When it comes to painting, Mr. Laskodi uses an admittedly unavailable line of paints (Floquil Military Colors), but leaves the reader hanging as to what they should use themselves.  For example, he might have listed the appropriate Model Master colors or those of other major brand name.  Further, he recommends that novice brush paint model, but uses airbrush on his.  The new builder will most likely find that his/her example does not match the pictures.

This article had a good idea for a detail enhancing wash using tube watercolor and acrylic thinner.  It look simple enough that even I might make it look good.

The disk retails for $9.95 (see ordering information below).  This reviewer is not sure it is worth that sum to own it yourself, but an IPMS chapter might have it in a “library” for many to use.  For such a short article, I ask myself, “Why a CD?”  The medium would have allowed, perhaps, links to other backup articles on paints, airbrushing, etc.

This product is available from Flagship Models, 2204 Summer Way Lane, Edmond, OK 73013, or on the web at www.flagshipmodels.com.  Use product number FMCD-07 when ordering the CD, and owner Rusty White tells us that it is currently available and costs $9.95.
