This is the first opportunity I have had to read through the magazine Windsock International, and I continue to be impressed by the quality of the publications by Albatros Productions. This bi-monthly magazine is definitely a magazine for the serious WWI period aviation enthusiast; all of the content is related to the WWI period. A mix of color and B&W, this issue is 32 pages long with a conventional format.  It opens with the sections  “Letters”, followed by  “Despatches” with news up dates, and “Logbook” a section of book reviews. On the backside of the features section are a “New Products” section and “Readers Gallery”. There are five feature articles in this issue and the articles include:

-         Rumpler’s Unique Dove – the Lutskoi Taube

-         RAF Museum Expansion

-         The Colour of War

-         Farman F-40 Colours

-         Dutch Bantam (Bat Fk.23)

Of these article the most remarkable is the “Farman F-40 Colours”; it includes WWI color photographs!  I never new color photography existed that early, and the pictures are quite striking.  The preceding article “The Colour of War” explains the story of pioneering French photographers and the autochrome technique that resulted in these photos.  Apparently Albatros publications is publishing them is all of it’s 2004 issues.

Included with the F-40 article are sets of 1/48 and 1/72 drawings include scrap views.  These are of the same high quality as the drawings provided in their monographs and detailed enough to build a model from.  They of course come with the rather bold warnings that proclaim that reproduction of any kind is prohibited.  The warning goes on with even a more direct statement to kit manufacturers not to use these resources without permission, which by the publisher’s admission is rarely given.

I only dabble in WWI modeling, but this looks like a perfect resource for those serious about the early period of military aviation.  Get the magazine in a combined subscription with the latest releases of Albatros Publications’ Monographs and you will have a wealth of information about the period at you fingertips.  Strongly recommended for the WWI air enthusiast.

My thanks to Albatros Productions Ltd. for the review copy.
