Vickers Viscount

Airliner Tech Volume 11

The Viscount was an historic aircraft, though one might not think so given the paucity of published material on the aircraft. It was in fact the first turboprop airliner to enter service and a revolution in airline travel, offering fast, quiet comfort over short and medium distances, with giant picture windows to boot! Its qualities led to Capitol Airlines buying over 60, and in doing so halved costs for that airline. Thus the Viscount was also the first British airliner to serve in the US market. Given this success, its not surprising to learn that the Viscount was the best selling British airliner of all time.

The book follows the normal Airliner/Warbird Tech pattern and is profusely illustrated throughout with color and black and white photos. I especially enjoyed the color shots of airlines long gone; a new 1/144th model and decal sets would be most welcome! Numerous diagrams also illustrate the text. Author Robin MacRae Dunn writes fluidly and with an obvious affection for the type. He covers the entire history of the Viscount from proposal and development to the final withdrawal from service in the 1990’s, a span of over 50 years. This is no dry history though, as Dunn writes vividly of the type’s service days worldwide.

The book concludes with a number of useful appendices, including a kit survey by our own Richard Marmo. The time has come for a significant model in 1/144 or even 1/72 of this important type.

This is a welcome addition to any airliner enthusiast’s library and I can recommend it to all. My thanks to Specialty Press for supplying the review sample. Specialty Press books are available at www.specialtypress.com; please add $4.95 per title for shipping.
