This edition of the Classic Colours series published by Specialty Press begins coverage of German bombers, from 1933.  This excellent photo essay actually begins with the birth of the bomber force which caused such havoc in WWI, that along with Fokker D VIIs, “all night bombing aeroplanes” were to be handed over to the allies at war’s end.  As with previous editions, every color profile is accompanied by black and white photos of the actual aircraft.

There’s a lot of territory covered here: “between the wars,” the Spanish Civil War, the 1937 Autumn War Manoeuvres (how about a Do-17 E-1 with red circle national insignias?), and on through to the lightning envelopment of all Europe to the English Channel.  In addition to the wealth of photos and drawings to satisfy any modeler, the authors have compiled a history of the bomber organization from the earliest Kampfgeschwader (bomber wing) to the Luftflottes Order of Battle on 10 May 1940, spelling out each unit, the aircraft they had, their leaders and home base.

The text covers the growth to the Luftflottes as well as battles fought, along with maps that help make sense of it all.  It’s rich with “you are there” narratives as well as quotes from Hitler’s Directives.  And of special significance, you’ll find an explanation of the fuselage and wing code system used by the Luftwaffe, down to the Staffel code letter and color.

This book is recommended for anyone interested in, or modeling the early Luftwaffe and understanding the code designation they used.  Available for $29.95 plus $4.95 shipping and handling at Specialty Press Publishers, 39966 Grand Ave., North Branch MN 55056 or call 1 800 895 4585 or go to www.specialtypress.com.
