A truly comprehensive look at what was to be the last, and one of the best single engine piston fighter/attack aircraft ever produced.

Sub-titled “The SPAD’S Last War”, the text covers the period during the Southeast Asia and Vietnam, when the aircraft became a true legend.  It also covers some of the men who flew this aging bird into history, including narratives of combat operations.  Maintenance and ordnance are also covered in this writing. And if you weren’t convinced that “Rube Goldberg Lives”, check out the detailed explanation of the “Yankee extractor seat”.  (I think I’d rather ride the pieces down !)

Over three hundred photographs, many in color, are contained herein, many of which I hadn’t seen published previously, making this an excellent reference for modelers, as well as a most entertaining historical read.  Colors and markings for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and RVN Air Force are covered along with copies of the jacket patches worn by the crews.

Appendixes A through H depict just about every aspect of the A-1 in all configurations.

Lastly, there is a photograph done of the helmets of the pilots that says it all --- “Jets are for Kids!” (My sentiments exactly). To sum up, this is a most worthwhile collection to your library, whether a modeler, history buff or just a plain aerophile.
