Sikorsky HH-52A

An Illustrated History

by Lennart Lundh

By Reviewer Tony Darienzo,  #37251

152 Pages, numerous color and black and white photos; many technical drawings.

Author Lundh states: “The Coast Guard’s HH-52A fleet saved at least 15,000 lives. An additional  25, 000 people were assisted. Further it was estimated that a half a billion dollars in property was saved through the efforts of HH-52A crews” Very impressive. The outstanding record of the HH-52A is matched by this comprehensive history of the type’s service. Author Lundh provides a detailed overview of the chopper’s development along with crew notes, squadron use and deployment, squadron patches and ship markings, actual sortie reports, accident reports, dispositions of damaged ships, crew losses and use by other branches of the military and foreign governments.

The reproduction of the photos is excellent and includes numerous color cockpit and cabin shots as well as extensive color exterior views. Color photos of cabin equipment, i.e., seats, seatbelts, survival gear, emergency tool kits, etc. only heightens the overall depth of the coverage given to the Coast Guard’s use of the HH-52A. There are also several line drawings showing the general arrangement of the ship.

The book progresses from topic to topic in a logical and easy to read manner. That a great deal of time was been spent researching and writing this work is clearly apparent--there is even a “roll call” giving the service history and disposition of each HH-52 used by the Coast Guard.

Especially interesting were the many reminiscences by HH-52 crewmembers. Some recalled rescues conducted in perilous conditions while others recounted personally significant flights.

Both modelers and aviation history buffs will certainly enjoy this outstanding publication.
