If you are looking for a quick one-place reference on the Me-262 test aircraft this book is a must.  If you are looking for a great read this book may not be what you are looking for.  This latest offering from Schiffer Publications contains photos, drawings and color plates of almost every known version of the Me-262 test program.  Written by noted Luftwaffe ’46 expert David Myhra, this hard bound book is the first in a series of books on the Me-262.  The book contains 246 pages of normally large high quality photos, drawings and color plates that examine the Me-262 from it’s early gestation period.

There are some previously unpublished photos, but most of the photos have been seen in other publications.  The book contains drawings from other noted Me-262 research documents, such as the Classic Publications Me-262 volumes and the Monogram Publications, “Jet Planes of the Third Reich”.  Photos include everything from the initial line drawing by Willi Messerschmitt to wind tunnel test models to actual operational test aircraft.  The superb models of Gunther Sengfelder are featured throughout.  The line drawings are beautiful renderings of each variant, with each feature covered in the text and/or photos.

One detractor for me was the inclusion of a whimsical “1960s” red flame embossed black Me-262 right on the cover and in the color plates.  I have learned never to say “didn’t happen in the Luftwaffe” but this is a little out there for me.  The flames look cool but I don’t think that they are historically accurate.  I think you would have to show me.  Despite this blemish, the book is well researched.  The color plates are nicely done and offer a variety of paint schemes for the modeler.

I recommend this book to anyone as a quick reference to the Me-262.  It contains all the vital information you would need to model any Me-262 test aircraft.  I enjoyed the clear and concise bulleted items.  They proved a quick and easy reference on the development of the aircraft.  If you want to read about the development of the Me-262 then this book may not be for you, stick with the Classic Publications volumes 1-4 for in depth analysis.  As a modelers reference, this book is hard to beat.

I am looking forward to the rest of series.  The book is available in model shops and book stores that carry the Schiffer range of books.  Thanks goes to Schiffer Publications for the review copy.
