ISBN: 0-7643-1940-X Hardcover, $59.95 www.schifferbooks.com During the Spanish Civil War, then the Battle of Britain, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 established itself as a premier single-seat fighter that could outclass and outgun nearly every rival it encountered. The only other aircraft over Europe and Russia to strike fear into the hearts of pilots in such a manner was the Focke-Wulf FW190, or Wurger (Butcher) bird. Focke-Wulf FW 190A: An Illustrated History of the Luftwaffe’s Legendary Fighter Aircraft delves into the development and production of the earliest variant of this aircraft, the FW 190A. From the conception of the idea to produce another single-seat, air-superiority fighter to the technical conditions under which it was conspired, the authors have all the proverbial bases covered in this book. An entire chapter devoted to the Luftwaffe’s Test Pilot Corps is included, giving some insight into the evolution of an aircraft, and the human factors involved. An entire chapter is also devoted to the experiences of a Test pilot with the Hexergrund Torpedo Weapons Station, recounted in first-person by Johann Schmitt. The hard-covered book is printed on thick, glossy pages, and the dust jacket features beautiful artwork by Steve Ferguson. Comprised of 224 pages, this book is essentially a pictorial history of one of the world’s most prominent historical fighter planes. Rare black and white photos abound, many of which are Nazi propaganda photos from the war. These are very interesting and entertaining, as the “cut and paste” techniques of days gone by are obvious. Line drawings of every type are scattered throughout the book, including early-prototype variants that never progressed past pencil and paper. Focke-Wulf factory manual drawings are also in abundance in this book, as are 9 color plates and 5 color photos of a resident of the Aviation Museum in Hanover-Laatzen. Detailed, archival photographs of cockpits, undercarriages, weapons systems, etc., etc., make this a must-have for the Luftwaffe modeler. Comparisons and contrasts between this aircraft and the Bf 109 are drawn in text, providing discussion fodder for the next contest you attend…..! |
